Air travel industry has set clear climate targets: improve the aviation fleet efficiency by an average of 1.5% per annum between 2009 and 2020, stabilize net carbon emissions through carbon-neutral growth from 2020, and reduce net carbon emissions by 50% between 2005 and 2050.

The competitiveness of the Canadian air transport sector is increasingly dependent on its ability to adopt environmentally sustainable practices. Since 2009, the Green Aviation Research and Development Network (GARDN) has contributed to the development of technologies and processes for quiet, clean and sustainable air transport, including projects on sustainable aviation fuels.
