OPTIMIZED VERSATILITY OF THE A220 AIRCRAFT (PMD4)
The project is a collaboration between Airbus Canada and STELIA Aerospace Canada. It supports the continuous improvement of the A220 aircraft to encourage the replacement of previous-generation aircraft fleets by studying new functionalities that will increase flight autonomy and performance. These innovations intend to increase the aircraft’s versatility and provide an additional competitive advantage—thus generating economic benefits in Quebec, where the aircraft’s nerve centre, pre-assembly line and main assembly lines are located.
Designed in Quebec, the A220 is the first aircraft in history to have an official declaration report describing its composition and impact on the environment throughout its life cycle. With a 25% reduction in fuel consumption per seat compared to the previous generation of the aircraft, the A220 allows a reduction of CO2 emissions by 1.1Mt (metric tons) compared to previous generations of aircraft for a fleet of 20 aircraft over 15 years.
Increase of Autonomy
This collaborative project will develop new functionalities that will increase the autonomy and, therefore, increase the range of the A220 aircraft. The modular approach of the developed system will allow customers to adapt the aircraft’s performance to their business model. STELIA will perform detailed drawings and analyses of structural and system components.
Increase in Maximum Weights of the A220
Increases in maximum weights are expected to provide additional range and operating autonomy for the A220. The zero maximum fuel weight and maximum landing weight will be increased in case an additional load is required during the operation of the aircraft. This flexibility will allow airlines to offer their passengers increased baggage capacity in the aircraft cabin. With the increase in maximum takeoff weight, the overall performance of the aircraft will be improved.
The combination of these new functionalities to the aircraft’s advanced technological characteristics will make the A220 an even more versatile, efficient, and competitive aircraft in the aviation market. Replacing fleets with new generation aircraft like the A220 will make a positive contribution to the future of the airline industry and its sustainability roadmap.
